Repair or Replace? The 50% Rule for Appliances

By Precision Appliance CareApril 4, 20265 min read

Your dishwasher just stopped draining, your dryer is making a terrible noise, or your refrigerator is not keeping food cold. The repair technician gives you a quote, and now you face the question every homeowner dreads: should you repair or replace the appliance?

There is a simple guideline that appliance professionals use called the 50% rule. Here is how it works, along with other factors that should inform your decision.

The 50% Rule Explained

The 50% rule is straightforward: if the cost of repair is more than 50% of the price of a comparable new appliance, replacement is generally the better investment. If the repair costs less than 50%, fixing it usually makes more sense.

For example, if a new dishwasher costs $600 and the repair estimate is $200, that is about 33% — repair it. If the estimate is $400, that is 67% — you are probably better off replacing it.

Average Repair Costs by Appliance

To help you apply the 50% rule, here are typical repair cost ranges:

  • Refrigerator repair: $150 to $500, depending on the issue. Compressor replacements run higher.
  • Washer repair: $100 to $400. Bearing and tub seal replacements are on the higher end.
  • Dryer repair: $100 to $350. Heating elements and gas valve solenoids are common repairs.
  • Dishwasher repair: $100 to $300. Pump and motor replacements cost more.
  • Oven or range repair: $100 to $500. Control boards and igniters are the most common repairs.

Other Factors Beyond the 50% Rule

Age of the Appliance

Every appliance has an expected lifespan. If yours is nearing the end of its typical life, even a relatively affordable repair may not be worth it since other components are likely to fail soon too. Typical lifespans include:

  • Refrigerators: 10 to 18 years
  • Washers: 10 to 14 years
  • Dryers: 10 to 13 years
  • Dishwashers: 9 to 12 years
  • Ovens and ranges: 13 to 20 years

Energy Efficiency

Newer appliances are significantly more energy-efficient. If your old refrigerator or washer is costing $30 to $50 more per month in energy than a new model, factor that ongoing savings into your replacement calculation. In Arizona, where air conditioning already drives high utility bills, appliance efficiency matters.

Repair History

If you have already repaired the same appliance multiple times in the past two years, the frequency of breakdowns suggests the appliance is reaching end of life. Continuing to repair it is likely throwing good money after bad.

Availability of Parts

For older or discontinued models, replacement parts can be expensive or hard to source. If your technician mentions long wait times for parts or aftermarket-only availability, replacement may be the more practical choice.
