Dryer Not Heating? Here's What to Check Before Calling for Repair

By Precision Appliance CareMarch 31, 20266 min read

A dryer that runs but produces no heat is one of the most frustrating appliance problems. Your clothes tumble for a full cycle and come out just as damp as when you put them in. Whether you have a gas or electric dryer, there are several common causes for a dryer not heating — and some of them you can check yourself before calling for repair.

Check the Basics First

Lint Trap and Exhaust Vent

A clogged lint trap or blocked exhaust vent is the number one reason dryers stop heating effectively. When airflow is restricted, the dryer overheats and the thermal fuse blows to prevent a fire. Clean the lint trap before every load and inspect the exterior vent flap to make sure it opens freely.

In the Valley of the Sun, desert dust and debris accumulate in dryer vents faster than in other climates. Homeowners in Gilbert, Mesa, and San Tan Valley should have their dryer vents professionally cleaned at least once a year.

Power Supply (Electric Dryers)

Electric dryers require a 240-volt outlet. If one leg of the circuit trips, the dryer may still tumble on 120 volts but will not produce heat. Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker — it may appear to be in the "on" position but could be tripped to a middle position. Flip it fully off, then back on.

Gas Supply (Gas Dryers)

If you have a gas dryer, verify that the gas supply valve behind the dryer is fully open. The valve handle should be parallel to the gas line. If it has been bumped or turned perpendicular, the gas flow is shut off and your dryer will tumble without heat.

Common Causes by Dryer Type

Electric Dryer Not Heating

  • Heating element: The most common cause. Electric dryers use a coil heating element that can burn out over time. A technician can test it for continuity and replace it if needed.
  • Thermal fuse: This safety device blows when the dryer overheats, usually due to poor airflow. Once blown, it must be replaced — it cannot be reset. Critically, you should also fix the underlying airflow problem to prevent it from blowing again.
  • High-limit thermostat: This thermostat shuts off the heating element if temperatures get too high. A faulty one can cut heat prematurely or fail to turn it on at all.

Gas Dryer Not Heating

  • Igniter: The igniter glows to light the gas burner. If it cracks or weakens, it will not get hot enough to open the gas valve. You may see the igniter glow briefly before the dryer shuts off.
  • Gas valve solenoids: These electromagnetic coils open the gas valve to allow gas flow to the burner. They commonly fail after years of use and can cause intermittent heating — your dryer heats sometimes but not others.
  • Flame sensor: The flame sensor monitors the igniter and burner. If it fails, the gas valve will not open even with a functioning igniter.

When It Is Time to Call a Pro

If you have checked the lint trap, vent, power supply, and gas valve and your dryer still is not heating, the problem is likely a failed internal component. Heating elements, thermal fuses, igniters, and gas valve solenoids all require proper tools and electrical or gas safety knowledge to replace.
